Clicking the Effects button will open a palette with a secondary set of buttons from which you can select from four effects options. You can also select an item from the Effects submenu under the File menu
Flip Horizontal creates a new movie with the image flipped horizontally. When it opens the save file dialog, MovieTools will automatically append メ.HFモ to the original file name, but you can rename the file as you wish.
Flip Vertical creates a new movie with the image flipped vertically. When it opens the save file dialog, MovieTools will append メ.VFモ to the original file name.
Rotate 180。 creates a new movie with the image flipped horizontally and vertically. When it opens the save file dialog, MovieTools will append メ.Rotモ to the original file name.
Make Monochrome creates a new movie converted from color to monochrome. This option will only be available with source movies of at least 16-bit depth color. When it opens the save file dialog, MovieTools will append メ.Monoモ to the original file name.
Film Effects adds a メfilm lookモ to video. Selecting this function opens a dialog that gives you control over five parameters: Grain, Dirt & Dust, Scratches, Jitter and Stutter. The first three parameters have arbitrary ranges of 1 - 20, while the Jitter parameter has a range of 1 ミ 10 (10 pixels is a lot of jitter).
The Grain setting determines how much of a film grain effect is added. Increasing the setting increases both the amount and depth of the grain added.
The Dirt & Dust settings determines how many specks of dirt and dust are added to each frame. You can select dark specks, light specks or a mixture of the two.
The Scratches settings determines the number and frequency of film scratches. As with the Dirt & Dust setting, you can select dark scratches, light scratches or a combination.
The Jitter settings let you introduce the slight vertical and/or horizontal jitter thatユs characteristic of film thatユs been transferred to video. You can chose the direction and amount of jitter, which will added randomly.
You can also choose to introduce a メstutterモ to the output movie. The Stutter setting will cause MovieTools to repeat frames either one or two times, effectively reducing the frame rate of the original movie.
For instance, with an NTSC (30 FPS) background movie, selecting メRepeat Once" will result in an output movie with an effective rate of 15 FPS (each frame is repeated once, with every other input frame thrown away), while selecting メRepeat Twiceモ will result in an output movie with an effective rate of 10 FPS (each input frame is repeated twice, with two out of three input frames thrown away).
You can also choose to convert a color movie to monochrome while the film effects are being added. This is the same function available separately above, and is included as an option to eliminate the need to process a movie twice.
The Resize functions are keyed to the dimensions of the background movie, and are designed to rescale movies from one standard to another. MovieTools knows about common NTSC and PAL computer graphics standards and their CCIR 601 counterpart dimensions. When it opens the save file dialog, MovieTools will append メ.Rszモ to the original file name.
Rescaling is performed according to the dimensions of the following background (input) movies:
NTSC Formats:
640 x 480 or 648 x 486
This scaling converts standard computer animations to CCIR 601 digital format.
The background movie will be resized to 720 x 486 CCIR 601 dimensions.
If the background movie is 486 pixels high, MovieTools will resize the movie horizontally to 720 pixels.
If the background movie is 480 pixels high, MovieTools will open a dialog that will let you select from one of two options. (These options are part of the preferences file, and will be remembered when you run MovieTools in the future.)
If you select the Fast Resize option, the output movie will have three black lines at the top and bottom of the output movie, with the horizontal dimensions scaled up to 720 pixels wide.
The Fast Resize function does not display a frame progress bar. It does display a file progress bar.
If you select the Best Resize option, the output movie will be scaled both horizontally and vertically to 720 x 486. There are two factors to consider when choosing this option: It takes much longer to process a movie, and if there are fine horizontal patterns, this option may cause some subtle horizontal メbandingモ in the image.
The Best Resize function displays both a frame progress bar and a file progress bar.
Whenever possible, youユre probably better to select the Fast Resize option, which not only saves time but generally provides better results.
If the movie includes audio channels, they will be copied into the output movie, interleaved at one second intervals.
720 x 486
This scaling converts CCIR 601 format video to standard computer dimensions.
The background movie will be resized to 640 x 480 NTSC dimensions. The top three and bottom three lines will be cropped, and the horizontal dimensions scaled down to 640 pixels wide.

720 x 540
This scaling converts computer animations created at 720 x 540 to CCIR 601 with maximum resolution. This lets you create animations at a standard 3:4 aspect ratio in your animation software, and then convert it for output to a digital video recorder.
The background movie will be resized to 720 x 486, which is a 90% reduction in image height.
PAL/SECAM Formats:
768 x 576
This scaling converts PAL format video to PAL CCIR 601 digital format.
The background movie will be resized to 720 x 576 CCIR 601 dimensions.
